well shoot it looks like my secondary monitor is dead <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://definecynical.mancubus.net/forum ... ns/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif' /><!--endemo-->. actually it still works but I have reason to believe that it is what kill my video card over the Christmas brake, and I've been hearing a high pitched sound every now and then when my computer was on. I turn that monitor off and the sound is gone. oh well I guess I can live with just one monitor for a little while <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://definecynical.mancubus.net/forum ... ns/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Yeah, I got it when my dad bought a PC with windows 95. It still works fine, except if you leave it off using the power button on the front too long, you have to reboot several times at long intervals to get it working again, and sometimes it decides to have a very magenta wash (everything goes BRIGHT pink), sometimes a pale yellow or faint lime/cyan, and once I saw it go deep blue all over, really dark so you couldn't see what was happening.<br><br>But it runs 1024x768 and it's pretty big, and it works fine most of the time, so I still wubs it <!--emo&:wub:--><img src='http://definecynical.mancubus.net/forum ... ns/wub.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wub.gif' /><!--endemo-->

i still use my original monitor, over 10 years old, a packard bell that came with our PB win3.11 computer system, when i'm hooking up an old computer to test it out. the monitor works fine, except for the contrast slips down a notch if i don't duct tape it.

Mine was a cheap 17-inch that was about 4 or 5 years old. that thing was one of the darkest monitors I've ever seen! my primary 17-inch is about 6 years old. I got it at a yardsale for like $20 it use to be a school moniter but it work great.

Heh ... Ozymandias, yours sounds like the one we have stashed in our basement. We get ours all at yard sales and stuff and have to replace one roughly every year. My current one has gotten into the habit of "floating" ever so slightly. Plus it has a very thin, almost unnoticeable line going all the way across the screen about 3/4 of the way down. Now here's the weird part -- the computer labs here have the same brand of monitor (but a completely different model), and <i>they all have the line too!</i> I have no idea why that would be. <!--emo&:blink:--><img src='http://definecynical.mancubus.net/forum ... /blink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='blink.gif' /><!--endemo-->

I remember one monitor that my computer servicing class in high school had. First of all, it had <i>television hookups</i> on the back, including a port for a co-ax cable. Also, if it was every moved more than an inch (while it was on) the screen would shifft through about three colors, go blank for 3 seconds, and come back on as if nothing had happened.<br><br>About those lines, I think those are caused by leaving the monitor on for too long. It probably burns out part of the CRT, but I don't know for sure.

Wow, I guess I've been fairly lucky when it comes to monitors <br><br>I have a 21" Trinitron and a 19" Trinitron on my main system, and they both work exceptionally well. My mom's computer has a 17" Trinitron that I accidently dropped off the back of my truck while loading it up, but it still works great, just has an ugly case now. And I just switched out my sister's old HP monitor for a 17" Trinitron too <!--emo&:P--><img src='http://definecynical.mancubus.net/forum ... tongue.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tongue.gif' /><!--endemo--><br><br>Good luck on getting the new one, I suggest office surplus sales as a good source of monitors. I got my two 17" Trinitrons from the local hospital for $10 each, and they're both in perfect condition (except the one I dropped, but it was in perfect condition before that <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://definecynical.mancubus.net/forum ... /smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo--> )

My 9-year old secondary monitor still works fine. However, monitors DO start to squeal after a while. Mine doesn't =D

I've hear that once the start to squeal they dont have much life left cuse something is going out on it.

In my experience, if a monitor goes for ~5 years without any troubles, then it will last a very long time. For some reason, it's most likely to die in that timeframe.

the same goes with Lithium batteries. they're not supposed to last long, but all of my SNES games still save games, and the same with all but one of my computers, which is a Mac Classic II.
