You know, I'd take the time to read what you proposed, Giz, and may still, but right now, I can't find the will.

(Moan)

Not through fault of your own. I guess I'm just overly cynical of the whole political process, either through facts or media spin. The whole issue of elections boils down to the lesser of two evils, and the idealist in me just starts screaming that when it comes to deciding who governs the country, dammit, it shouldn't be a choice between two poor candidates.

(/Moan)

I mean, one small, recent example is the publishing of minister's expenses. They actually claim expenses for running their frickin' houses. Heaven forbid they actually pay for it from their own salaries like the rest of the county.

Bleh. Politicians suck.
Oh dear lord sig is fubar. o_o

As such, it becomes more or less irrelevent to keeping Bush out if Kerry or Nader get your top vote or your second vote. To be honest, due to the general 'anyone but Bush' feelings I seem to be encountering in various places (with anyone but Bush excluding Kerry on occasion), I'd predict that in an instant run-off system you'd see Bush's actual supporters (and not those that say that Bush is the lesser of two evils) put Bush at the top, and everyone else put him near to the bottom.

But. No voting system is perfect, true. According to the article I linked to, the only system that supported the innocent proposal of "A is prefered to B. C should not effect A vs B." (or, to put it in english, if you prefer Coffee to Tea, the presence of Hot Chocolate on the menu shouldn't make you want Tea over Coffee) would be a dictatorship, where only one person's opinions are considered. Analysists do say that most systems have a better representation of preferences than plurality (the current one).

Voting in general is a bad solution. It's just a huge popularity contest. Using this logic, take a look at who's gonna be running the country:

her

or

him.

now you see my point.

Unfortunately, the current voting system is still a lot better than the alternatives and I can't think of any better ideas, and even if I could, it's not like people would listen to me.

...Say, I wonder who would win an election/ popularity contest between the two..

Exactly... Though the term is instant run off.
