Cooking.

Postby rabid_fox » Fri Feb 15, 2008 7:15 pm

Apparently a significant proportion of UK people don't know how to go about boiling an egg and struggle with anything beyond 'put it in the microwave'.

I enjoy cooking, myself. Why, I just (about) finished a meal there involving delicious chili con carne served with a particular rice dish of my own devising that involves four different types of vegetable and a jalapeño pepper puree. Monstrous in serving size and deliciousness.

The thing is, it's very, very rare that I won't cook something to eat. I mean, sure, if I'm in a rush, I have thin-based pizzas that I can bung in the oven and be ready in ten minutes (see: Parent's Evenings, where you have about half an hour to get home, eat and then you're hurtling back to the school to meet the first parents) but apparently some people eat like this all the time.

This thread is all about food and your attitudes to food. Jamie Oliverites, however, will be laughed at.

I myself cook a lot at my house. Heck, I cook well over half the stuff my family eats nowadays. Here below is something I made a couple of months back that I wanted to take a shot of. Kinda wanted to do that whole 5 star look and appeal with this. (Wish I had my own dishware set for this sort of thing.)

It's a really light meal of just nine shrimp, I know, but it was incredible tasting. it was simply made with some ground garlic, a light dash or oregano, a very light hint of paprika to add a little color, and a bit of parmesan.

My main non-microwave, non-toaster, non-restaurant foods these days are spaghetti, quesadillas, and (sigh) ramen. Because I'm impatient when it comes to preparing food.

Preparing food is something I enjoy and do not do enough of. Especially baking. I can bake some mean snickerdoodles and cinnamon raisin swirl bread. :P

Oh, and as for drinks, try blending:

-1 cup of coffee,
-3 scoops of coffee flavored ice cream

Reheat the blended mixture in a saucepan, then blend again for maximum froth. Pour in a glass and serve with either a mint leaf or some shredded chocolate. Tastes like Starbucks without the wallet pain.

-He joined the IRC sometimes. But not enough, I say! Chat moar =D
-He is evidently only 18 year old but he could easily pass for 25. =D
-He is a drummer like *I* am and this in itself is cool.

Tonight at my house,
Jack Daniels chicken over a large portobello mushroom surrounded by basmati rice covered in Bacon's special Jack Daniels sauce.

-Steamed Broccoli
-Merlot
- Arrogant Bastard Beer
http://www.arrogantbastard.com/doubleba ... kedpr.html

The chicken is marinating in Jack Daniels and white wine as we speak.
With a dash of Emril essence.

Chicken will be served on top of a portobello mushroom that has been cooked in olive oil and butter. Basmati rice will surround the dish, while steamed broccoli heads lay on top.

-Spoon sauce from pan on rice and chicken and enjoy.

After the chicken is done wrap it up in foil and stick it in a toaster oven on low.
-Add some shallots into pan where chicken was cooking. Cook for a few min.
-Pour white wine into the pan where chicken was cooking and deglaze for 5 min.
-Pour some Jack Daniels (and some chicken stock if desired) into pan and bring to a low boil until alcohol is gone.
-Pour in some heavy cream and cook to a thick sauce.
Add a tad more JD if you're feeling froggy.
I also use a spoonful of molasses to give it a sweet kick.

I'm experimenting with this one tonight, we'll see how it turns out. I'm guessing It will taste like shit, but who knows.

Another thing I love to cook is this recipe for the poor bachelor. Take any kind of pasta and boil it. When it comes to a boil, add 1/4 a stick of butter (or margarine for those who love eating plastic.) When it's ready, strain it. Use the same pot and begin to melt 1/2 a stick of butter and add garlic power or granulated garlic, a bit of onion powder, salt, oregano, and a little basil. Keep it well stirred and add 1/4 a cup of milk. Once again, keep stirring or it will begin to burn. Add either Italian style bread crumbs or parmesan until the sauce thickens. Add the pasta and mix thoroughly and serve. If you want, add some shrimp in there too. Really great and easy to make.

Damn that looks so indescribely good. Must resist urge to eat computer screen. I loves swimp. As for cooking, I myself have started trying my hand at foods beyond my usual such as spaghetti. I work with food and nutrition a lot with my job since I work for UGA food scientists.

I do cook, and aren't that bad at it...but when I'm cooking for myself I don't see the point in making an effort. To me, food is just the fuel that stops me dying.

I only make an effort when I'm cooking for other people.

At this moment, I am consuming a glorious meal involving the guts of yesterday's cooking and a fresh green leaf salad as a base rather than rice.

The inclusion of sliced chili is never a bad idea when making a salad. This meal is hotter than that poster of the tennis player rearranging her undies.
