July 1st...1916

A post about The Somme reminded me that it's approaching the 91 year mark on July 1st. It inspired me to draw this piece, that I really honestly worked hard on making good and conveying the feelings I get when I think about what those guys must have gone through...and think about how hopefully none of us will ever experience what they did.

In the words of war poet, John Masefield:

"...the hand of time rested on the half-hour mark, and all along that old front line of the English there came a whistling and a crying. The men of the first wave climbed up the parapets, in tumult, darkness, and the presence of death, and having done with all pleasant things, advanced across No Man's Land to begin the Battle of the Somme."

Anyway...what you lot think?

Interesting...

It's kinda ironic that the first of July is a day of celebration in Canada (except Newfoundland)

If I didn't know who drew that picture, I wouldn't suspect you.

Looks Good!

Powerful stuff there Roo. It's interesting to see you do something so different from what you normally show us.

I really wanted to do something else after drawing this last year - http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/32350770/

I intend to do something on the 11th of the 11th too.

Nice. I've always wondered about WWI. It must have been so brutal, even compared to WWII or any other war. Not just fighting, but the corpses, the mud and the smells...
A good book on the war is: "All quiet on the Western Front" I highly recommend it.

Maybe I'll move the movie to next on my Netflix queue.

I never actually saw the movie, so I don't know how good that is...
