Also Gigantor, The first (or one of) Giant robot anime.I can think of one anime that features some unrealistically large schnozzes: "Astro Boy."

Well, that particular technique is usually only used when characters are distorted, exagerated, or super-deformed. So it basically helps with making a character look more comical or whatever the siutation requires. Usually it's easier to convey emotions with a less detailed face. But it can also be used in regards to age.
