Equanimity
At this point I decided I could cram in some plot exposition. Had I not needed some (this story was not exactly moving along briskly before now, let's face facts), this idea would have required dialogue only in the last panel. I think using those otherwise silent panels to explain what was going on worked better than if I'd slowed down the action later to do it.

::is trying to figure out the fastest way to get into checkmate:: Hmm...I was never any good at chess. If I had a board in fron of me, I could do it, but I can't visualize it in my head.

Oh... I remember I actually did it once. Mainly because I usually like longer games so nobody was expecting anything that early. Now let's use the powers of the internet.

http://alex-chess.ecoholiday.com/images ... r>
well here's the end of it... I wish i could find the exact setup...

The four move checkmate is quite well known, you just need thee other player to do the right moves for you.

Um, why would Locke be taking time out from conquering Greater Llewellynland to play chess with Ozy? especially if he's that bad at it?

Wouldn't the fact that Locke stopped long enough to play chess against Ozy also indicate his poor skills at strategizing?

Well, Ozy said that it was in the morning, so it may have been before the whole takeover even started.

I doubt Ozy would have had a chance to play chess against Locke before the takeover.

In the comics shortly before, they found Locke in the attic. At least a couple days beforehand, the pony incident had occurred. Since Ozy said "This morning", it was clearly less than a couple days ago that the two played chess, which forces me to reason that the game was played after the start of Locke's attempted coup, but obviously before the battle currently playing out on this and maybe the previous strips.

Locke embodies a ten year old boy. Wouldn't he find time to be distracted by his goals for games or cookies?

Absolutely. That is my point. There is no reason to believe that he did not play chess between attempts to overthrow Llewellyn.
