This isn't the first time Llewellyn spoke of Hayes. He must have it in for that guy.

He probably ran the Rutherford B. Hayes Official Fan Club back whenever that guy lived.
The hat looks good on him though

Not likely; he said he "never did take to Rutherford B. Hayes" earlier.

Yet another classic Llewellyn moment.

I love how in the third panel they're just standing there staring at him like he's crazy (or at least Millie, because Ozy is doing his usual expressionless thing)

Praying mantis in the beard could be a new metaphor for the chaos theory that uses the butterfly flapping it's wings.
Llewellyn looks really content in the third panel.

Well, you know both of them have to be thinking he's crazy right then..
And so, probably the close of the 'Old West' strips, or at least it seems so...

Huh. I do this same thing in real life. Attempt to give a moral that has nothing to do with what I was talking about previously. Until my friends banned the use of the phrase "and the moral of the story is" in any conversation that I'm in.

Or it could be an indirect reference to another comic author named Hayes.

Well, either way, I learned something today.

Doubtful. There would be no praying mantis in the beard, but a legless retile on a rock form of cocaine on an aeronautical vehicle.

This is exactly how I looked when I first saw this strip.

Sounds very plausible to me, considering what has been said of him here. Err... yeah.
