Play computer games for about three hours a day and your eyesight would go in a bat of an eyelid.

Last I checked, turning pages makes a very distinctive sound.

I don't read in the dark much anymore, but I used to do it because I was rigorous about saving energy. Except where TV and video games were concerned.

In the fourth grade, I read an old "Peanuts" episode from the period when Linus wore glasses. Lucy warned him that reading in the dark was bad for his eyes, and he said, "My opthalmologist says that is a mistaken belief." I took that as an authority to counter my mom. Now I understand that while the risk of long-term damage is largely exaggerated, the prolonged eye strain <a href='
