A question about lucid dreaming... How can you be sure whether you are controlling your dream, or dreaming about controlling a dream?

Personally I almost always realise it's a dream but assume the role of the observer and just let it continue without trying to change it directly. I have no idea how or why I do this, though I do have some theories.
