He does cheek fur a bit more sophisticated, but this is the point where he is switching to the ear pattern I just switched to as well.

I really like the pointy ear pattern as well, however, I have to admit I express more in the ears, but I also have to admit David Simpson expresses far more in the mouth of his characters than I ever could, and that doesn't stop him from expressing in the eyes, something that according to his messages on the old Yahoo Groups mailing list, just comes natural to him.l

well, this particular arc, had it been followed through, could have been one of the best! I still stand by my point that it's best that DCS didn't start the entire story over, but this strip is a very good argument as to why it may have been a very good idea, as well as really funny!
If you've done things right, people won't be sure if you've done anything at all.

This signature may spontaneously combust at any given moment. Make sure there's a fresh can of gasoline handy.

I'm trying as hard as I can to discern whether or not the heads are based on circles. Sometimes it looks like they are, and sometimes it doesn't. Maybe you've noticed that when I draw my characters (or anyone else's for that matter) I base the head on a sphere. As for why I care how Simpson does it, I'm nos sure. I'm just always fascinated seeing how real cartoonists sketch out their strips.

I can, however, see that Simpson sketches a lot out in pencil before inking, just like I do. Some cartoonists -- and I've seen this in action, by the way -- can actually start with just a few circles/ovals for heads and then ink the whole strip in from there. Seriously. I can't fathom how someone can do that; those people are clearly not human.
Well, the old Process page goes a bit more into the details of the ... uh, process. But not quite as in-depth for what you're looking for, though. They do seem to be based on very simple circles, from what I can see.
