Calvin & Hobbes

The other day, while Christmas shopping, I went into the bookstore and found a large collection of Calvin and Hobbes comics on discount. To be honest, this time last year I wouldn't have even bothered to give it a second look, but mainly due to Dave continued praise, I decided to pick it up. I didn't remember much of Calvin besides being jumped by his stuffed tiger, so I must say that I did like it. Actually, I spend the rest of the night reading through it.<img src='http://definecynical.mancubus.net/forum ... /smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /> Before Ozy and Millie, I didn't consider comics as anything but the funny section in the newspaper. Now I realize comics can have a lot of meaning in them. It's interesting, really, how much your horizons can broaden in a short time. As for further reading, I don't think I'll be looking at Calvin and Hobbes. It's nice to look at once, but I'm not curious at what else Calvin is doing. That makes it quite different from Ozy and Millie. I can see where Dave got some of his inspiration, but I think he's expanded on what made Calvin and Hobbes good: Ozy and Millie seem much more real and fleshed out than Calvin. At least, it seems so to me. In any case, I will be picking up the Ozy and Millie books. Here's hoping you have a Merry Christmas.

I've been reading Calvin and Hobbes since... since I could read actually, considering my brother and mother were addicts to it, between the three of us we have all of the collections released except for Homicidal Psycho Jungle Cat, which my uncle (mother's brother of course) has. It was the similarities between Calvin and Hobbes and Ozy and Millie that got me hooked at first. They're good books, and usually can be picked up fairly cheap.

I like Calvin and Hobbes, but I get lazy at times with series that update daily, even Dilbert and Garfield.

Calvin and Hobbies is the funniest comic I've ever read, period! But my library only has one damn it!

The similarities between O&M and C&H are what really hooked me. I kinda like how O&M has the genuine humor and pseuo-philosophy of C&H, but also has some more random humor and addresses current issues (but isn't overly political). C&H still stands as the definitave comic strip for me. I have every single book.

When I first began to read through the O&M archives, I found a lot of similarities to C&H, which helped hook me on O&M even more. I have all the C&H books as well. Oh yes, there's <a href='http://www.ozyandmillie.net/2000/' target='_blank'>this page</a> in the index, with Millie as Calvin and Ozy as Hobbes. Rather appropriate, I think.

I was reading Calvin and Hobbes long before Ozy and Millie and like others i found a lot of similarities between the two. Mostly the fact that both strips take on challenging and serious issues for comics in a newspaper style format. I don't have all the books and i'm not as crazy about them as i used to be, though i still consider the comic to be one of the best. Well nothing equals Peanuts in my opinion.

Also, it seems like O&M characters are based off C&H archetypes, like how Hobbes and Ozy are both usually the voice of reason, yet reluctant accomplices to the mischevous one (Millie or Calvin). Both are tormented by a playground bully (Moe and Jeremy). Both have some form of a female foil (Felicia, Susie). Both are in elementary school, yada yada yada...I'm trying to figure out where Llewelyn would fall in here...maybe a mix of Hobbes and Calvin's dad...</td></tr></table>  To expand on this, I'd also put Locke and Spaceman Spiff in the same catergory.
