Heyas, and what's this strip mean...

I recently found the archives, and downloaded them. I am reading them slowly, savoring the feel that was like when I purchased a new Calvin and Hobbes book. The strip for March 25, 2002 is the first one I really don't get. I can't find a google reference, but I prolly don't know what to search. Ozy and Millie are in (I guess) Ozy's house, sitting on the floor, with stone walls, a fireplace, a pic of Ozy and his Dad on the wall, and it is one image (not a triptych). There is one line, spoken by Ozy - "*Ahem* I'm going on a trip, and I'm taking leave of my senses, the fifth, the 'A-Train', a flying leap..." <img src='http://definecynical.mancubus.net/forum ... /blink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='blink.gif' /> Is this a beetles reference? Apparently, "I'm Going On A Trip..." is some sort of car-trip game they play out west. I'd never heard of it until reading O&M, I'm guessing the point of the game is to one-up each other or something [shrugs]. That particular strip was supposed to be an abstract version of the game. Oh, and welcome! Are the lyrics in the story line for Millie when she meets her pirate dad ('I was so much older then, and I'm so much younger now') from the Animals' song, 'When I was young'? 8-14-2002 is the date. Never heard that song before, and the strips' lyrics don't match the lyrics I found on-line exactly. The "I'm going on a trip..." game is a memory game (if memory serves me well) where each player has to say something as well as remember, in correct order, whatever was said previously by everyone else. Obviously it can get confusing after time, the last person to remember all wins. "Ah, but I was so much older then, I'm younger than that now." This is from Bob Dylan's song "My Back Pages" and was probably used because it was so appropiate to Locke's situation. Thanks for the link, I prolly would have never found it by myself. I never played that game, "Goin on a trip...", but I have played similar versions. Like someone writes down complex directions to somewhere, tells them to the person next to them, who speaks it out loud to the group, and then the next person recites it, etc. If you have lots to remember, and a dozen people or so, the directions become different and simpler. In the Simpson family, we always used to play the "going on a trip" game in the car. I don't normally travel with my family in the car anymore--this is both an adulthood plus and an adulthood minus, because I used to enjoy car trip games but not so much having to take my turn sitting in the middle or listen to my siblings yell at each other or get thrown up on by my brother (that only happened a couple of times). But I still like to play it when I'm killing time in the car. Of course, I play it more like Ozy and Millie do, now. Back in the day, it was simple stuff: "I'm going on a trip, and I'm bringing an apple, a banana, a car, a doorknob..." Now, it's more likely to be something like "I'm going on a trip, and I'm bringing Ansel Adams, a banana republic, craven misuse of power, a dodecahedron..." I never thought of it as a west coast thing--it's played in an episode of MTV's "Daria," and in the play "The Nerd" by Larry Shue (which is, by the way, a really funny play). But maybe I'm unwittingly helping it reach a larger audience? I dunno. Whatever. It's just fun.

Hm. I believe that's one of only two things that really confused me in the Archives. The other thing being "Amway distributors". I never did figure out what the deal with this "Amway" or its distributors was. Of course, I always assumed that the "going on a trip" thing must of been commonplace. Since I am an only child, I have absolutely no frame of reference.

Let me guess, you were being very sarcastic, and that's what you meant. Of course, some people go on a trip induced by drugs or other things, but then they sometimes "don't come back" so to speak. (In other words the trip ends at the funny farm.) It's well advised to learn to use you're own mind's potential for such things and not some exterior substance.

Stuff you don't really want or need. But actually, LOC (Liquid Organic Cleaner) is pretty good, and Amway sells it.

Amway has a business model that's not really a business model in the traditional sense: distributors get paid based on how many new distributors they recruit, and can make a lot more money signing up new distributors than they can selling the actual cleaning products. The result is that is ends up seeming very much like a weird cult.
