They could be both. Japanese characters were derived from Chinese.

and the Japanese language -I believe- actually has THREE alphabets...(which is why it often takes a while to translate video games from Japanese to English...)

Well, the only logical explanation IS, after all, that the woman is handed a new sign between every panel. Or, another possibility, it is an electronic high-tech-sign that changes slogans every few seconds.

So much for logic.

Honestly: It's a comic. Things like that just happen in comics.

Now for something completely different: Isn't the first one a Katakana letter? That would make the signs definitely Japanese, since the Katakana alphabet has been invented by the Japanese. Well, maybe nowadays the Chinese use it, too.

What interests me is: Where did DCS take those signs from? Maybe someone can translate them.
Back home in Germany, I always wonder what to write in my signature. Here, I can at least tell you I'm German, and that any mistakes I make in spelling, grammar or other matters are completely natural considering I'm not speaking my mother tongue here.

I like to play Chess, by the way. Not that anyone would care.

Well, maybe DCS is like my Computer Science professor, and relaxes by writing random oriental letters.

And no, I'm not making this up. My professor actually does that. Sometimes his overheads have random chinese characters in the margins for no reason.

Well, if we stayed on topic all the time, we would be a bunch of wicked conformists, and Millie would "vanquish" us. Or at least try to.

Well, on the topic of "Easter Eggs" in the strips, take a look at this one. Who's picture is that that's all graffitied in the first and second panels?
