This cartoon falls flat (though I like the cashier's remark about Ms. Mudd's teeth) for several reasons. First of all, why would a cashier even bother to fuss about what the customer is ordering, unless the customer makes some special request rather than just buy what's readily there? The cashier is there to make a sale, not a judgment. Also, RL animals are not pure carnivores or herbivores, especially if food is scarce. Second, it's the vegetarians rather than the non-vegetarians who do the proselytizing. So unless DC Simpson had this happen in real life, the joke doesn't work.

Don't read too much into it. It's just more unfunny preachy crap.
