I think through these incidents she's building the experience and opinions with which she'll come to terms with the place of animals and humans in the comic. Since that's the main theme of the story isn't it? This is all just HER character development so far.
I think if the comic was just a random series of "where things just happen to Raine" I'd be interested. But only because that way it could be more open to quirky incidents and humour, instead of the more serious vibe Dana is going for.
What I mean about stuff happening, is that bad things happen to Raine, and we therefore are to sympathize and agree with her. However, this world is flat. I think Raine is somewhat two dimensional at this point, and the other people in this world are nothing but two dimensional. That is just unacceptable. This comic has been online for 5 months. How long do we have to wait before we get something that is the caliber of work we know DCS is capable of? One month, 2, or 6? I'm losing patience, and I want the story to get going.

After comparing the first 32 pages of “Raine Dog” and “The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck” let me put D.C. Simpson’s abilities as a comic book author this way:

Or will this be a story where things just happen to Raine, and the characters have no other purpose than to try desperately to make us feel bad for Raine only to fall flat on their face and make us annoyed and wonder why in the hell we're reading this?
