For some reason I still have trouble imagining that it's already 2008. In my mind I viewed 2012 as much, much farther away than just 4 years. Strange.

But what's the point of them? They move at walking speed, which defeats the purpose! "Oh, look! I can WALK, or ride this horizontal escalator that moves at the same speed as WALKING!"
Their meant to reduce the amount of time spent carrying heavy luggage.

There's another reason: The walkways prevent people from stopping, and otherwise back up the rest of the other people. It keeps things moving.

Okay, I'll grant you that. Especially in airports like Atlanta, Ronald Reagon National (Washington DC), Dulles (Washington DC), Logan (Boston), etc.
