The solution is very simple, and uses similar triangles. Here's a diagram:

Image
It should be quite obvious that triangles ABC and BFG are similar, as are triangles BEF and BCD. Therefore:
9/x = y/z
and
x/4 = y/z

9/x = x/4
x² = 36
x = 6

Huh, I used intersection height = height1*height2/(height1 + height2). Never saw the triangles.

Always look for the triangles.

Fred the Farmer and his brother, Geoff the Gardener, have acquired a ten-acre plot of land between them. They split the rights to the land evenly and go to work at planting seeds and crops on their half of the farmland.

Farmer Fred starts from the west, while Geoff the Gardener starts from the east. Fred plants seeds at twice the rate Geoff does, but Geoff ploughs an acre every ten minutes while Fred takes twenty-five minutes.

Selling all of their produce results in 400 gold coins between them.

How much of that wage is Fred entitled to?

((And yes, I just yoinked this from somewhere else. :locke: ))

assuming they planted the same amount, same type, and the produce grown was the same level of health and everything, wouldn't it be split even since they both own half the farm? you didn't say they had to sell everything before they were finished planting and harvesting and all.

A farmer hired a mathematician to build a fence to contain his sheep, thinking that a mathematician could build the most efficient fence possible. Upon receiving the job, the mathematician proceeded to build a tiny fence around himself. When the farmer asked him what the heck was going on, what was his response?
